Government Of Mauritius Africa Scholarship Scheme
The Government Of Mauritius Africa Scholarship Scheme is offering scholarships to deserving students who are resident citizens of member states of the African Union or of African Commonwealth countries for fulltime, on-campus undergraduate (diploma/degree) and postgraduate (MPhil/PhD) programmes tenable in public Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Mauritius.
Overview Of The Government Of Mauritius Africa Scholarship Scheme
The Mauritius scholarship for African students will support successful candidates in meeting their tuition fees and in contributing to their living expenses during their studies period. Furthermore, this scholarship to study in Africa also covers a return airfare by the most economical route. This will be valid for travel from the country of origin at the beginning of the studies and back to the country of origin upon successful completion of studies.
Government Of Mauritius Africa Scholarship Scheme Value
- The Scholarship will support successful candidates in meeting their tuition fees and in contributing to their living expenses during their studies in Mauritius. Furthermore, the scholarship covers a return airfare by the most economical route. This will be valid for travel from the country of origin at the beginning of the studies and back to the country of origin upon successful completion of studies.
Tuition fees and course-related costs:
- This scholarship provides for annual payment of fees and other studies-related costs (e.g. general/annual fees and miscellaneous fees, etc) as per grid below: SN Beneficiaries from Applicable Rate Total fee payable up to:
- 1 SADC Countries Local Fees MUR100,000
- 2 Non-SADC Countries International Fees MUR160,000 (as at 15 November 2022, 1 USD = MUR 44.25)
Living allowance:
- Awardees are expected to come to Mauritius with sufficient funds (approximately USD 1000) to meet expenses during the initial phase of their stay (about three (3) months), while formalities are being completed locally.
- A monthly living allowance of MUR 14,200 will be paid to awardees as part support to meet their living expenses. Students are expected to supplement this amount to cover the cost of living in Mauritius. This allowance will be credited to the awardee’s bank account in Mauritius on a monthly basis, subject to the submission of evidence of enrolment and satisfactory attendance in the study programme by the HEI.
- The payment of allowances during the final year of enrolment in the study programme will cover, on a pro-rata basis, a period of two (2) weeks following the final day of examinations.
- Awardees should inform the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology in writing, preferably two (2) weeks in advance, in case they have to leave Mauritius for any reason.

- Undergraduate Diploma Three (3) years
- Undergraduate Degree Four (4) years
- Master’s Two (2) years
- PhD Three (3) years.

Government Of Mauritius Africa Scholarship Scheme Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants for Mauritius Africa Scholarships should be above 18 years of age and should not have reached their 26th birthday at the closing date of application;
- For Master’s programmes, applicants should not have reached 35 years and,
- for PhD programmes, applicants should not have reached 45 years by the closing date of application
- Applicants must have applied for full-time on-campus studies at any public Tertiary Education Institution in Mauritius for academic year starting in 2022;
- The scholarship will be for a maximum of four (4) years or the minimum course duration whichever is lesser.
Qualification entry requirements:
- Mauritius Africa Scholarships’ candidates should have successfully completed end of secondary school to be eligible and should satisfy the minimum grade requirements as indicated below:
- 24 points at GCE A – Level which will be computed on the basis of the following grades obtained in three Principal subjects: A+=10, A=9, B=8, C=7, D=6 & E=5;
- OR at least an overall average of 70% or an overall average of, 14/20;
- OR criteria equivalent to (i) or (ii) above.
- In case the language of instruction is not English in the qualifying examination, the candidate will have to provide a valid TOEFL or IELTS test results with a minimum score not less than 550 or 5.5 respectively, or an appropriate proof of English Language proficiency.
- Candidates who are already holders of an undergraduate degree will NOT be eligible under this scholarship scheme.
- Self-financing candidates already studying in Mauritius in will NOT be eligible under this Scholarship scheme.
Government Of Mauritius Africa Scholarship Scheme Application Process
An application under this Scheme is to be made solely through the Nominating Agency responsible for the processing of scholarships in the country of citizenship of the applicant. Such Nominating Agency, which may typically be part of the Ministry of Education in the country of the applicant, will then shortlist and endorse the applications of a maximum of FIFTEEN (15) eligible candidates (the decision on the distribution of nominees from the undergraduate and/or postgraduate programmes rest on the nominating agencies) and submit the duly completed application forms as per the table below:
- Intake: August/September 2023
- Deadline for electronic submission: May 19, 2023
- Hard copy should reach Mauritius by: May 26, 2023
- Applications, together with supporting documents as required should be forwarded to the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of Mauritius at the address mentioned below, for a final selection.

- Copy of letter of conditional offer by a public Higher Education Institution in Mauritius (if available at time of application) OR copy of acknowledgement notice from a Mauritian public HEI that the application for a seat has been made and the appropriate application fee has been paid;
- Medical certificate to be duly filled and signed by a registered Medical Practitioner in Section 6 of the Application Form. This should be appropriately stamped;
- Study/Research plan for candidates opting for a Master’s and doctoral study.
- Supporting statement from a named supervisor from a University in Mauritius for PhD candidates.
