The University of Oulu International Scholarship Scheme provides scholarships to academically talented international students studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the University of Oulu.

 

Overview Of The University of Oulu International Scholarships

 

University of Oulu’s global impact is based on scientific breakthroughs and world-class innovations. 2.6 billion people use technology developed in Oulu. Oulu region is the largest urban centre in northern Scandinavia with over 200,000 people. Oulu, the European Capital of Culture in 2026, is known for its highly-educated people and friendly, easy-going atmosphere.

 

In order to retain the scholarship in the following year of study, a student must have completed 55 ECTS by the end of the previous academic year. If a student does not achieve this requirement, they will be liable to pay the full international tuition fee if they wish to complete their Master’s degree programme. An exception to this rule can be made if a student has been granted approved leave from studies (e.g. due to serious illness).

University of Oulu International Scholarships Eligibility Criteria

 

Candidates are eligible to apply for a University of Oulu IM Scholarship 2023/2024, if they are:

 

Non-EU/EEA Citizens

 

  • Non-EU/EEA citizens who do not have a permanent residence permit in Finland are e ligible to apply for a Master’s degree programme at the University of Oulu for academic year 2023/2024.

 

  • The applicant has obtained their first academic degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) from a recognised institution of higher education.

 

  • The applicant proves a high level of proficiency in English language. Approved methods of demonstrating language proficiency.

 

  • Applicants who are in their last term/semester of studies during the application period, can apply for the scholarship. Applicants who receive a conditional offer of study placement for a Master’s programme will receive a conditional scholarship offer.

 

Citizens of EU/EEA countries or Switzerland

 

  • Citizens of European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) countries or Switzerland studying in an international Bachelor’s and Master’s Programme at the University of Oulu are not required to pay tuition fees.

 

Exceptions to this general rule are students who:

 

  • are equivalent to an EU citizen (i.e. citizen of Switzerland)

 

  • have a continuous or permanent residence permit card in Finland (type A or P permit)

 

  • have an EU residence permit for third-country citizens with long-term residence permit card in Finland (type P-EU permit)

 

  • are a family member (spouse or child) of an EU/EEA citizen (have a residence card for non-EU family members of EU citizens)

 

  • have an EU blue card in Finland.

 

Scholarship Value 

 

The tuition fee is an academic fee and thus covers the costs of tuition. The tuition fee does not cover the living costs such as accommodation, meals, and transportation. All students are required to finance their living costs by themselves. 

 

The scholarship values include:

 

  • 50% Discount on Tuition:

 

A scholarship initiative that offers international students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland 50% scholarships. 50% of the first academic year’s tuition is covered by the tuition fee scholarship. 

 

The student’s academic achievement will be evaluated at the end of each academic year, and if they have earned at least 60 credits, the scholarship will be renewed. A student must pay the entire international tuition charge for the following academic year if they choose to continue their studies if they do not meet this condition. If a student has been given permission to take a study break, this regulation may be exempted (e.g. due to serious illness).

 

  • 75% Tuition Fee Scholarship:

 

A scholarship initiative that provides international students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland with 75% scholarships. For the first academic year, the tuition fee scholarship pays 75% of the cost.

 

The student’s academic achievement will be evaluated at the end of each academic year, and if they have earned at least 60 credits, the scholarship will be renewed. A student must pay the entire international tuition charge for the following academic year if they choose to continue their studies if they do not meet this condition. If a student has been given permission to take a study break, this regulation may be exempted (e.g. due to serious illness).

 

  • 100% tuition fee scholarship after the first study year;

 

A scholarship program that awards international students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland a 100% scholarship following their first year of study, provided they earned at least 60 credits in the first academic year. The student’s academic achievement will be evaluated at the end of each academic year, and if they have earned at least 60 credits, the scholarship will be renewed. A student must pay the full international tuition fee for the following academic year if they wish to continue their studies if they do not meet this requirement. If a student has been given permission to take a study break, this rule may be exempted.

 

University of Oulu International Scholarships Application Process Process 

 

There is no separate application for the International Finland Scholarships. All applicants for University of Oulu Master’s degree programmes need to complete the Student Application Form. Those applicants who are applying for the University of Oulu International Master’s Scholarship have to additionally complete the “Application for Scholarship,” which can be found at the end of the Student Application Form. The International Master’s Scholarship application form cannot be completed and/or submitted without the Student Application Form.
